ASEP Through the Years: 1998-2000

1998-1999

  • Under Dr. Benny Pacheco's tutelage, the 1st National Symposium on Geotechnical Engineering was held on March 1999 with over 300 participants and presentors from the various sectors of the construction industry. The committee that spearheaded this symposium later becomes the working group of the PICE special committee on geotechnical engineering. ASEP also became the catalyst in the formation of the PICE Specialty Committee on Structural Engineering.

  • During this term, 8th International Convention was held in May 1999. The papers presented in this convention was later presented again in Angeles City in June of the same year.

  • Major parts of CAST '98 were reprised at various chapters of the PICE all over the Philippines.

  • In line with the disaster preparedness program, a DQRST Seminar Workshop was held on March 6-7, 1999 in Naga City. In line with this, the DQRST Seminar-Workshop has been chosen as one module for the week-long training on Seismic Risk Mitigation for Local Engineers for Metro Manila by the NDCC-OCD.

  • In the international scene, Prof. A.B. Juinio, Jr. and Pres. B. Pacheco attended on July 1998 in Singapore a meeting of the APEC Network on Harmonization of Building Loads and Other Requirements. Also at Singapore, Prof. Juinio attended in August of 1998 a meeting of the committee on Asian Concrete Model Code.

  • Back at home, this term saw the ASEP's acquisition of a new headquarters located at Unit 713 Future Point Plaza, 112 Panay Avenue in Quezon City. ASEP also has revitalized its home page www.asep.com.ph and a new service provider was enlisted for the new e-mail address asep@surfshop.net.ph. The Membership Information Database was likewise initiated to update the membership directory.

1999-2000

  • The last set of Board of Directors for the old millennium was ably headed by Danny Tible III.

  • On September 21, 1999 an earthquake of magnitude 7.6 struck Taiwan. The Philippine government through the NDCC conveyed its sympathy to the people of Taiwan and offered humanitarian assistance through the TECO in Manila. In cooperation with the Office of Civil Defense, ASEP sent 19 structural engineers. ASEP once again sponsored the 2nd National Symposium on Geotechnical Engineering in Baquio City on September 3-4, 2000.
