ASEP Through the Years: 1973-1982

1973-1974

ASEP President Ernesto G. Tabujara initiated the Continuing Education Program geared towards the Association members. Subsequently, a committee under the Chairmanship of Lucas Agbayani was appointed to implement this program. The Continuing Education Program Committee was born with the single vowed aim of uplifting the standards of the structural engineering profession and initiating exchange of information among members and also with sister organizations in other countries. The first short course on Matrix Structural Analysis was conducted by the committee on December 9-14, 1974 at the U.P. College of Engineering.

1975-1976

  • Successful staging on the premier movie "Earthquake" to raise funds for the noteworthy projects of ASEP.

  • Strengthening of the Continuing Education Program making it more relevant and responsive to the needs of Structural Engineers. Brief courses were held at U.P. College of Engineering under the auspices of the ASEP Continuing Education Program Committee on various topics such as Finite Element method of Structural Engineering, Lateral Forces on Structures, Prestressed and Post Tensioned Concrete Design Ultimate Strength Design, Structural Dynamics and application of computers.

1978-1979

Holding of the Second National Structural Engineering Convention on December 14, 1978 at the PICC Convention Hall with ASEP collaborating with the American Concrete Institute. Two world-renowned lectures were designated by the director of Education of American Concrete Institute to conduct the technical sessions. The lecturers were Dr. William J. Wilhelm of the Wichita State University and Dr. Boyd C. Ringo of the University of Cincinnati. The Convention aimed to bridge the gap between the 1963 and 1971 ACI Codes.

1980-1981

  • Successful launching of the International Conference in Structural Engineering in Manila in November 1980. The conference was participated by delegates from Asian Countries, Europe and USA was sponsored by the Asian Institute of Technology, Hongkong Institute of Engineering (Structural Division) and ASEP.

  • Lecture Series on Bridge Engineering with Dr. W.C. Loo, Professor of Structural Engineering of AIT, held on November 23-27, 1981. This was the joint undertaking by ASEP and PICE in association with the UP College of Engineering and the AIT Continuing Education Center. This lecture was one of the six (6) well attended lecture series held during the year.

1981-1982

  • Publication of the second edition of the National Structural Code for Buildings. The NSCB is the official referral code of the National Building Code under PD 1096 as approved by the MPWH and as contained in the memo 82-1 series of 1982 which took effect last July 17, 1982.

  • Amendment of the Articles of Incorporation and By-laws:

    1. Extending the term of existence from 25 years to 50 years, from and after June 23,1986, the expiring date of the original application.
    2. Increase in the number of directors from 9 to 11.
    3. Adoption of a more rigid requirements for the graduation to the grade of fellow.

  • Holding of two seminars on Project Management and Concrete Technology on Construction on November 1982. These were sponsored by ASEP and organized by C.I.Premiere Ltd. of Singapore.

  • The ASEP-ACI Concrete Seminar with T.Z. Chastain, George C. Hoff and William R. Tolley; Past President, Director on Chapter Activities and Director of Administrative Services, respectively; of the American Concrete Institute as lecturer, held on October 28, 1982 at the Dames Hotel in Quezon City.

  • Seminar of Geotechnical Engineering with Prof. Yudbhir of AIT as lecturer, sponsored by ASEP, PICE AND AGSEP in association with the U.P. College of Engineering and AIT held on June 21-25, 1982.
